Superheroes: With Great Power Comes Ordinary Responsibility by Ian McWethy.

When the world doesn't need saving, and it is just an ordinary day, what do superheroes like Hawkeye, Storm, Wonder Woman and Batman do on their days off?

SUPERHEROES is a funny, fast paced series of vignettes that explores how the caped crusaders deal with life in street clothes.

 At ISU. The performing Arts Program uses the online teacher resource, The Drama Notebook, which provides royality-free performance scripts to educational institutions from original authors, who are often also educators! This winter, we will be using some of their publications in our December 8th Winter Performance Evening. As a thank you to the authors and the educational site, we post up the links for their scripts and write personalised notes to the writers. Drama Notebook is an amazing source we use to provide activities, lessons and games in the classroom and on stage to students at all levels of acting!

Morning Connections - Language Acquisition

At ISU our EAL (English as an Additional Language) curriculum offers a continual process of development from Grade 1 through Grade 12. Our EAL department strives to support students until they are able to function independently, both academically and socially, in the classroom. To this end, a supportive environment is provided in both EAL and homeroom classes to encourage students to take risks in their language learning and to increase their self-confidence. Language is taught and practised within natural context and meaningful situations, in which students feel accepted, happy and comfortable. At ISU we strive to provide an inclusive environment where all studnets can feel successful and learn at their own pace. 

A Special Virtual Opportunity for our Middle and Upper School Students

As part of our ongoing commitment to prevention and wellness, we have invited a prevention specialist from FCD (Freedom from Chemical Dependency) Prevention Works to join our community during the week of November 9. This programm will take place online.

As part of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, FDC is a non-prifit organization that provides substance misuse prevention ad health promotin services for schools.  Since 1976, they have worked with over a million students of all ages. 

Morning Connections - Digital Citizenship and Safety

This Morning Connection is an introduction to Digital Citizenship where we will also briefly cover topics that are taught at school.

We will also have Mr. Henry join us for this meeting to share some of his experience with regards to technology and his children at home and how he navigates this.

Additionally, our councellor will be on hand to answer any questions you may have in regards to digital media use from a social/emotional perspective.

Dear ISU Community,

Due to the special circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 virus, ISU cancelled our onsite Higher Education Fair that was set to take place on Friday, 20 March from 14:00 to 16:00. However, we are now able to offer a virtual fair where students and community members can use their electronic devices to scan a QR code for the university or educational institute that interests them most.

With this unique opportunity, we are now able to connect our students to a greater number of Higher Educational facilities across the globe!

St. Dithers School is in trouble! Following an extremely poor inspection the school has been labelled 'Average' and is in great danger of being closed down. The governors, worried about the fate of their school and with only six weeks to turn things around, decide to take drastic action. An X factory Show! The students have the opportunity to prove that they are outstanding and save their school.

4th December at ISU

This is a public event, which is organised by our CAS students.

4th and 5th November SEEIT at ISU

Catriona Harper from SEEIT will be at ISU on 4 and 5 November and will offer this session to parents. Catriona Harper has over 11 years experience of developing and facilitating workshops and training on child sexual exploitation.

She delivers training in secondary schools, youth groups, third sector and public sector organisations in Scotland, Germany and Norway, offering support and advice to victims of sexual exploitation and their family. 

SEEIT (Sexual Exploitation Early Intervention Training) workshops tackle a range of sensitive issues with the aim of preventing child exploitation through education. They can be delivered to young people from age 11 years upwards. (Not every topic is covered in each age group.)

A session for parents is offered on Tuesday 4 November at 15:45.

ISU stands in solidarity with the Global Climate Strike

ISU will stand in solidarity with the Global Climate Strike encouraging everyone involved with the ISU community to gather at the Münsterplatz 15:00 in Ulm on 20th September. We encourage our ISU community to design signs, and be visible and be heard. At ISU, we are committed to a sustainable world for current and future generations by fostering compassion, promoting awareness and inspire action and stewardship through the PYP Exhibitions, Service Learning opportunities, and of course our Eco Council. Nonetheless, as a school institution we aware that we can do more. From school leadership to students, we wish to maximise the design and operation of our school environment to ensure a positive effect on our immediate surroundings and global outreach. Please come and join ISU at the Münsterplatz at 15:00 on 20th September.

Internationale Fest, Ulm

ISU is participating in the internationale fest hosted by the city of Ulm on Saturday 4 May. ISU will have a booth at the festival from 13:30-19:00. We will also be participating in the parade from 13:00-14:00. All members of the ISU community are welcome to join us in the parade. We look forward to seeing you there.

ISU University Fair 22 March

ISU is hosting their second University Fair on 22 March from 12:00 to 16:00. You can meet with representatives from universities from around the world and hear presentations about application processes and a variety of programs.

Des Egan at ISU on 5 February

Desmond Egan, Irish poet, with be at ISU on 5 February. Des has a wide range of poetry and prose publications as well as translations and books of prose. His PEACE poem, was translated into hundreds of languages as part of a millennium celebration.

Winter Festivals at ISU.

Congratulations to all our wonderful Winter Festivals performers and supporters from EYP 1 to Grade 12. Thank you also to our wonderful PTG for the Christmas market. A true community event.

ISU Book Week.

ISU Book Week takes place from 22-26 October. The purpose of book week is to encourage people to read books. At ISU we believe that reading is very important and by promoting books we are encouraging our learners to become more proficient readers.

Book week will include character dress-up days, guest readers, front cover design projects and writing adventures stories, amongst many more activities. The highlight of the week will be the visit of Matt Dickinson. Matt is a film maker and writer who is best known for his award winning novels and his documentary film work. In 2003 he was the co-writer and director of Cloud Cuckoo Land—an independent British movie.

Our IB CAS students in the Community.

Our IB CAS students got a "shout out" in the Südwest Presse because of their volunteer work with the Einstein Marathon.  The Einstein Marathon is one of the many project our CAS students are involved with in our local community. CAS is an integral part of the IB and ISU programme. The three strands of CAS - Creactivity, Activity and Service - are often interwoven with particular activities.

In order to demonstrate these concepts, students are required to undertake a CAS Project. The project challenges students to: show initiative; demonstrate perseverance and develop skills such as collaboration, problem solving and decision making. Thank you to our CAS coordinator, Ms Schanz, for making this happen.

Thank you to our wonderful Parent Teacher Group (PTG) who welcomed our new ISU families on Friday 24 August. This year ISU is starting with its largest cohort of new students, with 60 new students representing 15 nationalities. Our new families with not just enhance the continued diversity of our school but will also be positively contributing members to our community.

ISU is lucky to have such a dynamic PTG whose mission is to serve as a liaison to foster communication between families and the school’s administration, staff and School Board. The PTG is also a vehicle for fundraising with special projects and events for the benefit of the school community.
